What is a Baptist?

We are a Baptist Church, not by our association with any established, organized denomination, but because we identify with the doctrines that have distinguished Baptists from other denominations for centuries. Historically these doctrines have been known as the Baptist Distinctives, and these biblical truths make up the core of our statement of faith. These distinctives are:

  • Authority of the Scripture: We believe that the Bible is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice both in the church and in our personal, daily lives. (II Timothy 3:16, John 17:17, Acts 17:11, Hebrews 4:12. 2 Peter 1:20-21)

  • Autonomy of the Local Church: We believe that each individual congregation should be self-governing and independent of any ecclesiastical hierarchy. (Colossians 1:18, Acts 13-14, 20:19-30, Ephesians 1:22-23)

  • Two Offices of Church Leadership: We believe that in the Scripture there are only two offices appointed within the church, Pastor and Deacon. Both offices are to be filled with godly, separated men who meet detailed qualifications laid out in God’s Word. (Philippians 1:1, Acts 6:1-7, I Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:6-9, I Peter 5:1-4)

  • Separation of Church and State: We believe that the church should be independent of civil government intervention, and that government should not have the power to intervene in the free exercise of religion. (Matthew 22:21, Acts 5:29-31, Romans 13:1-4)

  • Individual Soul Liberty:  We believe that the salvation of your individual soul rests upon your personal decision of repentance and faith in Christ. (Romans 10:9-17, 14:1-23)

  • Believer’s Baptism: We believe that the call to be baptized in Scripture is only extended to those who have accepted Christ as their personal Savior. Baptism is a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, just as we must spiritually die, be buried, and rise to walk in newness of life when we are born again. (Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38)

  • Priesthood of the Believer: We believe that every person who accepts Christ as their Savior has the distinct privilege of direct access to God through prayer without the mediation of any man or woman, living or dead. (Hebrews 4:14-16, I Timothy 2:5-6, I Peter 2:5-10)

  • Separation and Personal Holiness: We believe that as Christians, we are to live separate from the world and consecrated wholly to Christ so that our lives may serve as a living testimony of the work that he has done and is doing in us and through us. (2 Corinthians 6:14, I Peter 1:16)

  • Two Church Ordinances-Baptism and the Lord’s Supper: We believe that neither of these are essential to salvation, but both are pictures of the work that Christ has done for us and in us. (Matthew 28:19, I Corinthians 11:23-26, Acts 2:38-43, Romans 6:1-6)
